Frequently asked questions

Everything we get asked about surfing with Ragtag in Lisbon. Can't find your answer? Email ragtagsurfclub@gmail.com or message @ragtagsurfclub.

The basics

What is Ragtag Surf Club?

A community surf club in Lisbon. We surf together every Sunday, train on the beach when the waves aren't working, and hang out afterwards with a coffee. It was started by Jack and Martha, two surfers who moved to Lisbon and wanted an easy way to surf regularly and get to know people in the water.

Where and when do you meet?

Carcavelos or Caparica, every Sunday at 10am (or earlier if the surfs better then). More days and locations are coming as the club grows.

How do you decide where we surf?

Carcavelos is our home base. If the waves are better somewhere else, you'll get the call the night before.

Surfing & ability

I've never surfed. Can I still come?

Yes. Beginners, improvers and advanced surfers all have a place. We paddle out in groups by ability, so you're with people at your level.

What happens if the waves are flat or messy?

We move to the beach for a surf strength, mobility or yoga session instead, so you still get a proper session in.

Do I need my own board and wetsuit?

No. We partner with local surf schools that rent a range of boards and wetsuits. When you sign up for the tester session or membership, we'll email you to understand what you need and get you booked in.

Can I get surf lessons?

Yes. We partner with surf schools that offer a range of lesson types and prices, for every level. When you sign up for the tester session or membership, we'll email you to understand what you're after and get you booked in.

How much are lessons and board rental through the club?

Lessons start at €35, including a board and wetsuit, and go up based on the instructor and equipment you choose. Board rental starts at €20. Founding members get an additional 20% off both.

Membership & pricing

How much does it cost?

Membership is €49 a month, and founding members keep that price for life. If you'd rather try it first, a one-off tester session is €19.

What's included in membership?

Each month you get 4 surf strength, mobility and yoga sessions, 4 group paddle outs organised by ability, access to showers, changing and board storage, 20% off surf lessons, 20% off board and wetsuit rental, post-surf hangs with coffee and acai nearby, and priority access to surf trips and events.

How do I pay?

You fill in a few details and pay securely through Stripe.

Can I change or cancel my membership?

Membership is monthly. If you need to pause or cancel, just send us a message and we'll help — ragtagsurfclub@gmail.com, or @ragtagsurfclub on Instagram.

What are you adding later?

More days, sessions and locations, surf trips in Portugal and beyond, events, BBQs and parties, daily surf-fit classes, and the Ragtag app for organising sessions and chatting with other members.

Getting started
